Since Sarah Beren was a child, she has used art to express her thoughts and emotions when the verbal proved to be ineffective. Beren, who was diagnosed with bipolar and anxiety disorders, says that art “allows me the freedom to analyze, interpret, and respond to the issues I struggle with in living with such disorders and stereotypes.” She chooses to articulate these issues with a mixed media approach, using any available materials in her quest for expression. Framing is an integral part of Beren’s process and often becomes a part of the work of art itself. In Untitled (Rabbit—Turquoise), she marries strong and fragile materials to convey the relationship between a rigid, protective exterior and a delicate emotional core. The physical body of the rabbit becomes a metaphor for the psyche. Beren holds a BS in art education from Nazareth College and an AAS in graphic design from the Rochester Institute of Technology.

“I have been driven, obsessed really, for years in categorizing and making sense of my disorders, my thoughts and emotions, and of my place in this world. The development and creation of my artwork has proved to be a critical component in this search for absolute understanding.”
