Elayna Flodin primarily works with digital mixed media to create multifaceted, subtle, and deliberate works of art that confront her physical disabilities and encourage viewers to recognize the exquisiteness of nature: “In art I unveil the layers of complexity, pain, darkness, anger. I overlay these with the beauty of the natural world, softness of a butterfly wing, depth of color from a flower. I create a dance of vulnerability and strength through the once hidden and now exposed elements of our world.” In Nuclear Dark, Flodin layers images of deformed bone and delicate blossoms in a way that does not seek to gloss over her pain. Through her creativity, she turns her trauma into a thing of beauty. She seeks to bring out the complexities of disability and the natural world, reminding us that too often in life, we pass by both without much notice. Flodin graduated magna cum laude from Marylhurst University with a BA in interdisciplinary studies.
