Biography

Nabucco is Mattie Ullrich's WNO Debut.  Her recent opera work includes The Rape of Lucretia for The Norwegian National Opera and Der Ferne Klang for Bard Summerscape . Locally she has designed costumes for Zaide, Cosi Fan Tutti, Ariadne auf Naxos and Alcina at Wolf Trap Opera Company. Ullrich received the European Opera Prize in 2006 for her collaboration with Thaddeus Strassberger for Opera Ireland's production of La Cenerentola. In addition to opera, her diverse repertoire encompasses film, theater, musicals, and print. Ullrich has spent a major part of her career designing cutting-edge theater in New York City for theater companies such as The New Group, Vineyard Theater, 2nd Stage, and New York Theater Workshop.  Recent Off Broadway credits include  The Pride (Director Joe Mantello, Wicked) and  The Starry Messenger (starring Matthew Broderick). Currently Ms. Ullrich is designing the costumes for a  reworking of Stephen Shwartz's  much loved musical Working  with  new songs from Tony-winning In the Heights creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Slated for Broadway in Chicago's Water Tower Theater. Additionally, Mattie has designed costumes for many regional theaters including The Old Globe, Asolo Repertory Theater, Cincinnati Playhouse in The Park, Goodspeed Musicals, Huntington Theatre Company, Dallas Theater Center, Delaware Theater Company and Madison Repertory Theater.  Year of the Fish (Sundance 2007) and Sovereignty (award-winning short) are amongst her notable film work.  Currently Ullrich and Strassberger will collaborate on a new production of the one act operas Pagliacci and Cavalleria Rusticana for the Prague State Opera.
