Children's Art Online Exhibit: 'How Does Art Shape Your World?'

For Parents and Teachers: |
VSA arts issued this Call for Children's Art through our participating VSA arts affiliates and designated organizations throughout the 50 states and the District of Columbia at the end of September 2000. All youth were invited to participate in the call by submitting artwork depicting the exhibition theme, 'How Does Art Shape Your World?'
VSA arts believes thatall youth should have access to the arts. At the earliest stages of development, many children encounter barriers to their artistic aspirations - barriers that may include low expectations of the child's performance, attitudinal prejudices that prevent a student from engaging in art activities, and the lack of a stimulating environment that invites exploration and expression. By participating in inclusive art activities, children experience and respond to the world, look beyond themselves and appreciate the contributions that all people make to our society.
This call for art wasmeant to encourage art educators, administrators and facilitators to individualize instruction in response to students' strengths, toexplore alternative working methods in the arts and tofacilitate supportive connections between youth, working artists, and the community.
All participants received a Certificate of Participation. In February of 2001, two works were forwarded from eachVSA arts affiliate and designated organization to the VSA arts Headquarters. Out of these two submissions, one work was selected to be part of a culminating exhibit, 'How Does Art Shape Your World?' which debuted during Arts Advocacy Day in March of 2001. Five artists were selected from the final submissions and guests for the opening reception held in Wasington, DC.
