Many artists demonstrate their experience with disabilities in the content of their art. In each case, the artist uses the artwork to convey their personal experience of living with disability.

Frida Kahlo, one of the earliest painters of disability experience, mastered the self portrait. Her paintings are an intimate look at herself; her physical pain and turmoil as a result of numerous accidents and illnesses.

Casper Banjo, who was injured as a young child, uses printmaking to convey his experience of being an African American in the inner city. His limited edition lithographs document the city's violence, frequently incorporating scenes from the media.

Matt Sesow was hit by a landing airplane at age 8 that caused his left hand to be amputated. His painting is an exploration of subjects who are often times disabled, often times under the influence of extreme or unfamiliar emotion.
