Like historical movements such as feminism and African American pride,artists lend their support by incorporating references to history and their experiences within their creations. Artists with disabilities see themselves as leaders of change. They can give visibility and identity to the disabled community by translating the disability experience into works of art.

The work that results is testimony of their unique experiences, diverse backgrounds and varying disabilities. They believe that a commitment to disability subject matter will reverse stereotypical perceptions of people with disabilities and eventually foster an understanding within the public.
