"Animals,
Shadows and the Steps of Healing" Minneapolis, MN -"My multi-media work is about step and stage healing and these shadows, animals ladders all parts of the themes." While Mary Degen's chronic fatigue syndrome and toxic chemical poisoning limit her endurance and production, they do not limit her creativity and chosen media. After receiving a B.F.A. in Art and Art Education from Arizona State, Degen went on to receive her M.F.A. in painting and sculpture from the University of Minnesota. Moving to the use of a camera, Degen's photographs are unique because she manipulates hand-cut paper, lighting, and shadow to create mystical and powerful images. With the use of a view camera, she obtains the desired effect, a large negative in which her works can be transferred to posters or mural size. By enlarging these works, the animals have a very intriguing effect, and with them, she creates the mystery and magic of cave paintings. In addition to her personal photography, Degen is a K-12 art and humanities instructor and teaches advanced courses in watercolor, drawing, and Art History. She has maintained private art studios and receives commissions for both public and private works. To see more of her art work visit her web page at, http://www.users.uswest.net/~mdegen/ |
