Carla Gourdin,
Utah, United States,
Desert Roots,
oil (30" x 36"), 1997"Painting is the one thing I do in my life that is big enough for my spirit - when I paint, I need nothing else."Carla Gourdin began painting in 1974, after receiving a set of oil paints from a friend after breaking her neck on a trampoline resulting in quadriplegia. As she has developed as an artist and grown more accustomed to wheelchair living, Gourdin's work has become more expressionistic. Creating art, she feels, "allows me to share an understanding that living life differently and with physical limitations may be difficult, but it is not without beauty and meaning. I use my art work to give voice to what I can't say in any other way." Since receiving a BFA degree in Fine Arts from Brigham Young University, Gourdin has gained a reputation for her artwork throughout Utah, including the Art Access Gallery, a program of VSA arts of Utah.
