Gabriel Clark-Brown,
The Netherlands,
Leda on the Couch,
etching (26" x 27"), 1996Born with a speech impediment,Gabriel Clark-Brown found that art gave him new ways to express himself with confidence. He recently completed his Masters in Fine Arts at UCT's Michaelis School and is presently working on a book called "Disability Representation in South Africa." The aim of Clark-Brown's work for the past five years has been to create and promote credible disability representation. "I emphasize the people themselves rather than focusing on differences. Society is a hybrid of all sorts of variations of people, and people with disabilities are part of that." Clark-Brown has exhibited in France, the U.S., and England. He also takes photographs, in collaboration with other people with disabilities, working with them on how they wish to be portrayed.
