Born in Taitung, in east Taiwan,Kun-Shan Hsieh lost the use of both his hands and legs, as well as his right eye sight, due to an accident with high voltage stroke at the age of 16. Using his mouth, Hsieh creates rich oil paintings that have received honors in national art competitions and fine art exhibitions. Hsieh began his studies under the Artist Wu Hsuan-san in 1980, and his rich oil paintings have been displayed in individual exhibitions since 1981. Hsieh received his first honor, the "youth medal", in 1986. He has since received the "best works" award at the Taiwanese Exhibition of Handicapped Talent, 1993-1995, and was recognized as one of the "top ten most outstanding youths."
