gouache (32" x 26"),
1998

Liu Tung Mui, who has cerebral palsy, is a self-taught artist who combines gouache with freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese paintings. She has adapted a technique that demonstrates her determination to create, despite the physical exertion required to complete a painting. The most distinctive feature of her paintings is her strong use of color. Each of Tung Mui's paintings is symbolic of her universe, her secrets, joys, and sorrows. She understands that her only territory is that of the spirit, and color is the best vehicle to traverse that territory. Color has opened her life to strong emotions and the freedom of expression. "Painting is happiness as well as sadness. It's my private conversation with the universe and the symbol of my existence. A good painting admits no change and every sign in it has its own life." Tung Mui is an active participant in Artists with the Disabled Association Hong Kong, VSA arts' affiliate.
