landscape oil painting by Steve Welch of Wyoming, USA

Steve Welch,
Wyoming, United States,
Untitled,
oil on canvas (18" x 22"), 1994

Steve Welch started drawing when he was eight years old and worked primarily in pencil and charcoal through his early years. He was 17 when a car accident caused paralyzed, limiting the use of his arms. With the aid of a brace, Welch is able to manipulate the brush in a controlled way, and relays, "As with most quadriplegics, I have no dexterity in my fingers. All artwork is accomplished through movement in the larger muscles of my shoulder." Yet, art was not to be a discovery through his disability as he has been an active artist his entire life. In 1984, Welch participated in several classes at the University of Wyoming and eventually completed his B.A. in secondary art education and fine arts. His work has been displayed at the Plume Bleau Gallery in Casper, Wyoming and in several local exhibitions.
