Gary Hickerson, who restored Volkswagens as part of his family's repair business, transforms discarded parts into new forms embedded with life and meaning. He composes sculpture out of actual fenders or inspired by their curvilinear form. Hickerson, who has a facial deformity and deafness in one ear, has found encouragement and commendation in creating things. When he is sculpting, all insecurities are left behind. "It is ironic that during the process of transforming inanimate objects into objects perceived to obtain life, a life transformation is occurring within me." "I began by desiring to create symmetry, when in the end I found acceptance and variety in life." |
