Ken Smith began his creative work as a writer, later illustrating his writing with photography in commercial and editorial venues. After a serious aircraft accident in 1979, he began to gravitate toward fine art photography. Smith's work currently centers on still life as influenced by Japanese aesthetics. The study of abi-sabi—the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete—put into words the meaning behind his imagery. "I was still trying to transcend the imperfections in my physical self, using the beauty in the metaphorical statements I made with my work. Though the subjects were aged, drying, unloved…they were still beautiful from the inside out, in spirit." "At the start there was the attraction to botanical still life subjects which I attempted to meaningfully show in my photography. But later, I discovered they were images of my spiritual self, mirroring my own feelings in a full-circle of expression." |
