Kurt Weston represents his experience with blindness and its emotional weight through photography. In 1991, Weston was diagnosed with AIDS and eventually lost his sight. Losing the Light is from an earlier series of photographs that illustrates the experience of forming his vision beyond sight. The latter three images incorporate his use of visual assist devices that he needs in order to function while legally blind. Through self portraiture, Weston challenges the viewer to be self-conscious in the act of seeing. "These images are a visual autobiography of the psychological and emotional impact that sight loss has had on me as an artist." "My limited visual acuity permits me to view the world as if it were an impressionist painting." |
