“My art is a crystal ball. Through my art
people can see who I am, and what I’ve become. It is about
just being born, what comes may be unexpected and you may not
believe what appears.”
Mame N'Diaye began making art when she was six years old, encouraged
by her mother, who is also an artist. Working mainly in pen and
ink, Mame derives her themes from mystical fantasy worlds. "When
I make art my images just come, just like the images in a crystal
ball." Her linear style may be described as overflowing mazes,
with a strong attention to composition and interlocking subjects.
Within this series, she expresses the scenes and objects encountered
while taking an imaginary road trip with her family to New York.
Mame, who has Asperger’s syndrome and dyslexia, experienced
difficulties with formal school instruction. "In high school,
my teachers thought that I was not able to do anything because
of my disability. Through my artwork, I proved them wrong."
Mame is taking courses through the visual communications department
at Northern Virginia Community College.
