"I shifted gears when I learned to focus on what I could do and not let my disability limit my growth as an artist."
Matthew Lawson, who has severe allergies and asthma, began his artistic explorations in a makeshift studio to allow for his safety. The piece Isolated portrays this setting. While essential for his health, the accommodation left him isolated from his classmates. He expresses, “My artwork gives me a voice to express my isolation, and my disabilities put limitations on everything I do in life.” Lawson was often taken out of regular courses, such as biology, due to smells and harmful substances. While spending time in the library, he would spend hours drawing. Art served as a way to reconnect, to express his emotions, and to overcome his embarrassment. “All of my art classes and art teachers have taught me the value of art. I am grateful for the opportunity to turn my disability into something so positive.”
