At this point in my life, I’m not exactly sure where I am going. But I do know that wherever that is, and whenever I get there, I will have done it through my art.
April Alvarez
April Alvarez’s mixed media constructions incorporate what she can find around the house magazines, old film negatives, fabrics, and soda cans. Influenced by her artist father, Alvarez began creating at a young age designing outfits for her Barbie dolls. She grew up with learning disabilities, growth hormone deficiency, and a more recent diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis, a rheumatic disease affecting the joints. “Art plays an important role in who I am. I have a vision that is unique to me.” Within her work By Land she explains, “The traveler first comes to a rock with a skeleton key, each door represents a choice.” The doors are cut glass with variations of stained glass, collage, painted canvas, found objects, metals, and resins. Alvarez is attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
