In each person there are an infinite number of destinations that cannot be translated to others. I often feel that disconnection between people; I try to bridge the space by defining what I can of my inner spaces.

Eileen Wheeler strives to make the painting process physical, using smooth washes of line and color through paint with hard marks placed with graphite and charcoal. With this series, Wheeler begins with the internalization of her environment. “I am very interested in my location. Long after I’ve left a place I see parts of it in a new piece. While I may recognize the influence of old, real places, the new worlds of the paintings are always unexpected. When I start a new piece my destination could be anywhere.” Wheeler, who has bipolar disorder, says, “From year to year as my disorder worsens, painting is what prevents me from ceasing to be myself.”
