The Brother
By Grace Neeley

I am Aspergers
Yet I am not
I am the sister of one who was wrought
From the womb of the mother as a child
To you it may not seem worthwhile
To find the discrepancy
Between the life of yours
And the life of someone like me
But that’s not good because you’re being pigeonholed
And not seeing the colors of my family’s rainbow
But in a way it’s good because you’re treating us like the “norm“
This has always been the “norm“ to us
We couldn’t picture it any other way
The brother keeps life interesting
Keeps us on our feet
And on a separate level
Don’t stereotype until you take a moment and step in
Absorb what’s around you
And if you want to. just pretend
You’d fit in at our house if you did
Now go off in the brother’s own little world
But you only can for a moment
Because when you get back there is always reality
Not waiting for you but passing you by
I have often wondered what it would be like to be the actual “norm“
But then I erase the thoughts
Because all this happened for a reason
People say the brother and I are alike
We have the same creativity
And look through the same golden eyes
We have similar dreams and aspirations
And I know you’re thinking
Oh one day I hope they chase 'em
But one day is now
We won’t hold off until tomorrow
Because we will reach out
And tell tales about our fabulous lives
And if it doesn’t seem all that fabulous to you
Then it is your opinion
And we will go on being our own version of the American dream
The brother will still be reading
Everywhere we go
To the store, at home, even to the performance of his written Broadway show
I’ll never get tired of going to book stores no matter what I say
And he’ll never get tired of telling you about the next video game
He’ll invent, or a movie he’ll produce, star, direct, write
Because you just have to listen
And then you'll know why I prefer the un-normal life
