VSA arts of South Carolina is a statewide, nonprofit organization that served the arts, disability, and education communities since 1986. The office is located in downtown Columbia at the South Carolina Arts Commission (SCAC). The three organizations work together in promoting quality accessible art experiences for people with all types of disabilities throughout the state of South Carolina. Educational Programs and Artist Residencies

VSA arts of South Carolina and SCAC currently arrange several residencies throughout the state by providing grant opportunities for individuals and/or organizations who wish to deliver, improve, or implement services or instruction to children, students and adults with disabilities. Teaching opportunities and residencies for qualified teaching artists are available for qualified applicants.

Artists who are already on SCAC’s Roster of Approved Artists and have been trained in accessibility issues will be strongly encouraged to conduct residencies and perform in settings that are outside the scope of SCAC’s typical venues. Projects can also be supported through other targeted SCAC grant opportunities.

General Arts/Education Disabilities Services

VSA arts of South Carolina and SCAC, through a partnership with the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (DDSN), the South Carolina Department of Education, and the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind, offer year-round programs throughout the state.

Accessapalooza

Anderson County Arts Council members, Anderson County DDSN board members, and employees of a national corporate sponsor who have cognitive disabilities will receive arts instruction and the opportunity to exhibit their work at Anderson County Arts Council. The culminating event offers Arts Council and Anderson County DDSN staff an opportunity to attend a statewide hands-on training workshop.

Healing Arts Program (Year-Round Residency)

VSA arts of South Carolina and SCAC supports four community outreach programs that link the heath care providers with quality arts experiences as they show evidence of promoting healing, health, and therapeutic benefits.

Rhythm of the Beat: Diverse-ability!

Culturally diverse drumming and dancing residencies will showcase the history and hands-on participation of African American, Native American, and other artists at following three sites: South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind, Charleston County School District, and York County School District.

M.O.V.E.S: Movement Opportunities for Very Exceptional Students!

This is a new pilot program involving creative movement for students with limited mobility. Participants ages 4–16 will partner with student/mentors from Ridgeview High School (Columbia), and Columbia College.

Professional Development and Technical Assistance

Training for Residency Artists and Arts Organizations

VSA arts of South Carolina and SCAC offer general training programs, workshops and services related to the integration of arts and education for people with disabilities. These general training programs and services are designed for diverse audiences across the state. Services include intensive teacher, artist, parent, and arts program staff training on how to provide inclusive arts learning activities; one-time/one-day training; one-on-one consultations; information and resources for teachers, artists, parents, and arts program staff on specific aspects of inclusive arts learning activities and programming; and programs that support career development for artists with disabilities.

Five years of targeted training in accessibility issues has produced a corps of artists who are ready to teach the arts to students outside mainstream K–12 settings.

Cultural Access and Inclusive Arts Services

VSA arts of South Carolina’s executive director and contracted consultants may provide the following services upon request at almost no cost: training, technical assistance, and assessments on access issues for arts administrator and arts organizations.

The following equipment and community outreach services are available through the VSA arts of South Carolina and SCAC Access America grants: Assisted Hearing System, New Hearing Assistance Devices, and Ticket Subsidy support.

Audio Description Goes Kinesthetic!

Dance has proved difficult to audio describe. This pilot project brings modern dance to patrons with visual disabilities in the direct, personal, kinesthetic mode of physically experiencing dance postures, movement, and rhythm.
