FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C. - VSA arts, an international organization that provides opportunities in the arts for children and adults with disabilities, has issued a call for artists for the 2004 International VSA arts Festival, to be held June 9-12, 2004 in Washington, D.C. The theme of the Festival is Odyssey: DARE to Imagine...

Artists of all disciplines, including painting, sculpture, wood, drawing, metalwork, ceramics, computer generated art, dance, music and theater, are invited to apply for participation in the festival.

"The Festival will bring artists and educators from all over the world to Washington, D.C. to celebrate diversity, artistic excellence, and a shared sense of unity," said Soula Antoniou, president of VSA arts. "In addition to highlighting outstanding visual artwork and performances, we hope the Festival will create a greater awareness and understanding of the power of the arts to change peoples lives, especially people with disabilities. We invite the many talented artists from around the world to join us on this amazing odyssey of the spirit and the imagination."

Held every five years, the International VSA arts Festival is an opportunity for the public at large to witness and celebrate the extraordinary creativity and talent of people with disabilities. It is also the organizations largest and single most important global educational event, giving participants an exciting opportunity to discuss, learn, and explore issues around disabilities and the arts.

The Festival will mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of VSA arts by Jean Kennedy Smith and will include artistic performances, exhibitions, and educational seminars in venues throughout Washington, including The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Union Station.

To qualify for participation in the Festival two criteria must be met:

  • Individual artists or performers must have a disability

  • Groups of artists or performers must either all have disabilities or prominently feature artists with disabilities

Applications for participation must be postmarked by May 30, 2003 and there is no fee to apply. Artists will be notified of their acceptance by July 15, 2003.
